Nathaniel Bosum

Nathaniel Bosum, whose home is in the James Bay region of northern Quebec, speaks Cree, English and French. The village he is from is called Ouje-Bougoumou, which in his Cree language means “the place where people gather”.

This village of about 800 Cree inhabitants, located some 800 km north of Montreal, is a brand new village which was built during the 1990’s in his people’s traditional hunting territory. The people of this Cree community were forced, on seven different occasions, to abandon their villages because of the active mining industry in the region.

The new and current Ouje-Bougoumou village was completed around 1994 when Nathaniel was just fve years old. It was that year that Nathaniel was given his frst motorbike, a Suzuki 50cc. One year later, when he was six, Nathaniel won his frst championship in the Quebec Provincial series when he placed frst in the Pee Wee class of 50cc racers.

Born in 1989, Nathaniel considers one of the highlights of his racing career to be when in the Fall of 2004 he was promoted to the Professional category in order to compete at the Montreal Olympic Stadium in front of 55,000 spectators. He admits to being nervous and the big-name riders intimidated him. He was qualifying against 100 riders for only 25 spots in the fnal - he fnished in 14th place!

Nathaniel also competes in snow-cross racing in the winter.

Nathaniel believes that it is extremely important to be well conditioned both mentally
and physically at all times. He spends at least nine hours each week practicing different maneuvers with his bike on the ground and in the air.

The second type of training is physical conditioning. Therefore, he developed a schedule that allows him to maximize his training while in school. He begins at 5:30 a.m. every morning with a long distance run or biking for cardio, followed by weight training at the gym to develop different body strengths. Altogether this takes 2 hours every morning. After supper he goes back to the gym for another hour of exercises. The total workout is usually three hours a day, three days a week. He discovered also that a good diet is essential to maintain and to enhance the body muscles. He consults regularly with a Nutritionist in Montreal.
